BC Electronic Library Network (BC ELN) Student Librarian
The BC Electronic Library Network (BC ELN) has available 1 part-time Student Librarian position to support the work of the BC ELN consortium.
About BC ELN
We acknowledge the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish), xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), səl̓ílwətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh), q̓íc̓əy̓ (Katzie), and kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (Kwikwetlem) peoples, on whose traditional territories BC Electronic Library Network (BC ELN) offices stand. BC ELN is a partnership between the Province of British Columbia and its post-secondary libraries. It develops, promotes, and maintains system-wide mechanisms that provide equitable, cost-effective access to information resources, helping post-secondary libraries meet the expanding information needs of the province's learners, educators, and researchers, regardless of their location in the province. BC ELN core services include providing coordination and administration for virtual learning support services such as AskAway and WriteAway, managing the expansion of learner resources through consortial licensing, facilitating resource sharing among partner libraries through the Illume service, and enhancing access to digitised primary content through the Arca collaborative digital repository.
BC ELN is hosted at SFU. BC ELN employees are appointed under appropriate SFU employee agreements. Duties and Responsibilities
Primary duties:
- Staffing the AskAway collaborative chat reference service on the weekend (Saturdays and Sundays).
- Providing frontline support and technical troubleshooting to AskAway participating libraries.
- Developing and updating documentation, blog posts, FAQs, and training materials to support AskAway service providers and local coordinators.
Possible other duties depending on the successful candidate's qualifications:
- Developing communications targeting AskAway users.
- Providing additional AskAway and BC ELN service support as needed.
Qualifications
Required:
- Must be currently enrolled in a UBC iSchool graduate degree program.
- Must be able to work remotely with a stable internet connection on the weekends and available to come into the office one day during the work week.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in a collegial team environment.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively multi-task.
- Excellent English written and verbal communication skills.
- Comfortable communicating in an online environment.
- Strong computer skills, with a proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and HTML.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Outstanding analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Superior interpersonal skills and customer service orientation.
Preferred:
- Demonstrated ability to adapt to changing environments, meet deadlines, and work well under pressure with discretion, tact, and good judgement.
- Experience providing AskAway chat reference support.
- Experience providing library reference and research support.
- Ability to effectively search and use a range of library resources such as discovery layers, research guides, and databases.
- Ability to effectively communicate library services and policies.
- Familiarity with website maintenance and content and learning management systems (Drupal and Canvas preferred).
- Experience with technical writing.
Work Term
May 1 - August 26, 2022 (17 weeks part-time; up to 17-21 hours per week)
$25 per hour, including vacation in lieu
