Canadian Newsstream Renewal 2016-2017

Pricing is now available for Canadian Newsstream renewal. As was annouced earlier, there have been a number of changes made to the regular offer.

  • First,  there will be a name change. “Newsstand” has been changed to “Newsstream”, "reflecting a more modern approach to news – digital, with (in the future) integrated media and links.”
  • Second, ProQuest is in the process of looking at its product offerings and streamlining collections in 2016. In the case of the Canadian Newsstream collections, ProQuest will no longer offer the Pacific and Black Press subsets, but will continue to offer the Canadian Major Dailies subset and Canadian Newsstream Complete collection.

Most BC ELN customers subscribe to Major Dailies or Canadian Newsstream Complete, but there are a number that subscribe to the Pacific Collection. Since all of the Pacific Collection content is available in Canadian Newsstream Complete, BC ELN has negotiated significant reductions to last year's Newsstream pricing model, stable 0% increases for 3 years for existing subscribers of Major Dailies and Newsstream Complete, as well as 3-year transitional pricing for Pacific Collection subscribers in order to provide Partner Libraries an option for retaining Pacific Collection content at the best price via Newsstream Complete.

Canadian Newsstream provides users with unmatched access to current Canadian news content with archives as far back as the 1970s, from over 400 news sources. Newspapers, including The Globe and Mail and Toronto Star, along with newswires, websites, and broadcast transcripts are included in full-text format. Extensive backfiles are available for most news sources, providing full access to the articles, columns, editorials, and features published in each.

The core of the database is ProQuest’s Canadian Major Dailies, which includes national and leading regional newspapers such as The Globe and Mail, National Post, Montreal Gazette, The Halifax Chronicle Herald, Ottawa Citizen, Toronto Star, Regina Leader-Post, Edmonton Journal, Vancouver Sun, and the Times Colonist (Victoria), some of which are exclusively available through ProQuest.

Canadian Newsstream content is updated daily so researchers always have timely access to new information. Many newspapers are available by 8:00 AM U.S. Eastern Time on the day they are published. There are no paywalls.

ELN Sites may choose to subscribe to one or more of the following collections within the Canadian Newsstand database:

  • Major Dailies: includes major daily papers from across Canada
  • Canadian Newsstream: Complete: includes all titles from the Major Dailies collection as well as the now defunct Pacific Collection

Canadian Newsstream includes the following databases:

  • Canadian Newsstream - Over 190 Canadian newspapers from Canada's leading publishers
  • Canadian Major Dailies - This is the core of the Canadian Collection

Canadian Major Dailies provides access to current content and significant backfiles from more than 20 of Canada’s top national and regional newspapers in full-text format, including The Globe and Mail and Toronto Star. Many titles are exclusively available from ProQuest. With same day access to many publications, Canadian Major Dailies provides users with thorough and timely coverage of national and regional events. All titles are cross searchable on the ProQuest platform.
